Haverhill 2's 71 Colchester 0

Young players shine in convincing win.

Colchester were behind the 8 ball before the start, arriving late, and
missing a car of players who managed to get lost between Essex and our
part of Suffolk, leading to Haverhill lending some players at the start
to ensure a game got going.

On a scorching day, Haverhill fielded some new signings, in the form of
Matt Stevenson at hooker and Mike Woods at fullback, plus a number of
our young players coming through the youth section getting a run out.

The journey still in the Colchester legs had Haverhill over the line,
after an impressive take in the lineout by Brodi Patrick, within 90
seconds, only for the referee to disallow for a forward pass.

This allowed for our first view of hooker Stevenson, who did not
disappoint, striking against the head to win the ball, and for Aaron
Carr to punch through for the first score on 2 minutes, converted by
Simon Potter. 7-0

From the kick off, we immediately saw our second signing, Mike Woods run
with the ball 60 metres, and so far, he was left isolated, but a great
show of speed and skill to whet the crowds appetite of what was to come.

The next 10 minutes of play showed the only flaw in the Haverhill game
of the day, with players not making the high ball their own and catching
it. This would have been severely punished by a better opposition, but
as the game progressed, this situation was eliminated.

On 15 minutes, Bradley Gibson punches through the line, opening
Colchester up, and finally attracting a penalty, which quickly taken
allowed Potter to score and convert to make it 14-0

Haverhill were by now dominating the scrum and line, with Stevenson
bossing  proceedings in the front row with excellent striking, and
Patrick taking almost all of Colchester ball with a superb display of
fearless jumping. At the breakdown, one name was always mentioned, with
Sean Harkett putting in a great display of aggressive, in your face ball
play.

On 18 minutes, another great win against the head and a clever, jinking
run from No 8 Ricky Harris, passing a clever miss pass to winger Ryan
Miller to score his first for Haverhill senior rugby, and the first of
his two for the day. 19-0

2 minutes later, Potter breaks and holds his pass perfectly to release
Woods for his first try for Haverhill, under the posts, converted by
Potter. 26-0

Two more converted try's (Harkett/Potter and Miller/Potter) saw
Haverhill turn at 40-0.

Half time sees Joe Brown move into the outside centre position for
Potter, which turns out to be inspired, with nothing coming past Brown
for the rest of the game due to the huge tackling being put in.

Haverhill cross the Colchester line on a number of occasions, only to be
called back. Another storming run of 70 M by Woods just fails to convert
to points, but finally, on 20 minutes, Harris releases Lester to score
under posts and for Adam Hunt, on for Bradley Gibson. 47-0

3 minutes later Patrick makes it 54 -0 with Hunt's conversion. Things
now became a procession, with the ball being kicked by Colchester,
caught by Haverhill and a score ensued. Carl Anderson made it 59-0,
Harkett, after 70 M run made it 66-0 after conversion by Hunt, and then
Hunt, not to be outdone, takes the ball 65 M to score under the posts,
but misses the kick, to make it 71-0 and final whistle.
