Haverhill 6 Ely 32

With Ely having been on top of the league for most of the season, this was never going to be an easy game, but Haverhill actually showed some good work that bodes well for next season.

3 nil up after 5 minutes with a Jake Plumbridge penalty, Haverhill worked well for the first 10 minutes of the game, when a score in the corner off a good Ely move made it 3-5.

The big crowd of 120 people enjoying perfect weather were well behind Haverhill, and Haverhill continued to play well, with the good work in the backs continuing from the week before, although the Ely scrum half spoilt many of the Haverhill won ball at the back of the scrum.

Haverhill continued to push forward and were awarded another penalty, but Plumbridge pulled it left. Ely came back at Haverhill and scored just before the turn to make it 3-10 at half time.

The feeling was it was a good performance, but if/when Ely “clicked” it would be a different situation.

Ely scored straight after the turn to make it 3-17, but the return of Ransome to the pack gave a fillip to the scrum, and Haverhill dominated the pack for the next 20 minutes making Ely very uncomfortable.

Finally the superior drill of Ely, swanning in the Haverhill defence and rotating the ball quickly from each phase started to take its toll on the Haverhill fitness.

A great move in the Ely backs, with a lovely move and kick forward to allow the winger to score in the corner made the score 3-22. Haverhill managed to come back and missed another penalty, but then scored from another awarded almost immediately after for 6-22.
A penalty in front of the posts for Ely was taken to make the score 6-25, and just on the final whistle, a converted try made the score 6-32.

Coach Price was pleased with the performance as much of what has been worked on during better attended training sessions started to show itself on the field. Hopefully the close season will build on this positive approach to training.
