i can understand what your trying to say kev but for me personally it would take at least a month of training to prepare for playing again . it would be counter productive to drag all the old players out , this is just
another difficult turning point for the club just as when i started playing . its now a case of consolidating ,listening and learning from your coach and playing for your club and each other .

older is betterSorry buddy working this weekend, have joined the gym so maybe a COUPLE of games next season! I was waiting to play for the veteran's side so i could be one of the young boy's again!!!!!!!!!!!! Steve is right you must look forward not back & bring on some the younger talent & give them a run out. The coach knows what he is doing, It's just that a lot of people still see playing as a social event & therefore aren't quite commited towards training, preparation, etc. I was guilty of at times as well so i hold my hand's up.

Due to constraints that I can not talk about, I was not allowed to write about the impact some of our younger players made on the game Saturday last.
Brodi did an excellent job for the, in my view, too short a time on the pitch. I think we may have found a back row player of the likes of Marps or Gilson here.
Look at Luke Dore. First year as prop and doing an excellent job.
What can I say about Dave Golding? For a lad of this age to be as complete a player as he is can only bode well for the future.
Kieron Ewens. Great player, but need his confidence built up, not knocked.
Alex on Saturday came on an played a great 20 minutes.
It is not lost on me that for the last 30 minutes of the game we only lost it 7-0 whereas the first 50 minutes we lost it 50-0. This was where our youngsters were bought on.
Talking to team coach of the young U14's telling me what a great coach he was and fantastic Fly Half he was was nothing new. However, he did mention that he has some excellent young talent coming forward.
So the future is in our youngsters guys.
We need to nurture these players and bring them along. The older ones are here for standing on the touch line, drinking beer and talking about the times when we enjoyed a run out.
Our Dictator of Rugby knows what he is doing. He needs the support of all players to turn up once a week and train.
When I do a show, I make a commitment that sometimes involves "training" four times a week, with a full week of performances when the show is on. However, even though doing that I get "fit" by working on my songs and words outside of the "training" sessions.
So commitment is not to you, it is to the team, the club, the committee who have done a lot for the club over the past years, the supporters and to the town.
People often tell me how they follow the team in the paper and like to see our winning ways. We can get there, We are close, but we just need to push over the edge and get on a roll.
Just my 2 cents.

I agree with the above posts, youth and the youngsters coming through is definitely the way forward for the club. I believe the point the Kev was trying to get across was not the fact that we need the 'old heads' because of their experience of playing the game. But that we actually need more players available to play this week otherwise there will not be any games played.
We have already had to cancel one game, and at the moment of all the players at the club I have had 12 confirm that they are available to play on Saturday. That includes Bergin, Kev Carr and Sami all injured, and 5 under 18's.

As a club we do need to deal with injury crisis' that we have at the moment and a confidence crisis. I'm out for the rest of the season, but every game i played with my heart on my sleve and that prob why i've damaged my cruciate, we have to deal with and get on with it.
I agree with Kev and flanners tho, myself at 27, Flan at 29 we are the oldest by a mile in the squad of players. We try to bring our youngsters on and in Dave and keiran we have good talent. remember they are only just 17 and have played a full season of 1st team rugby. The experience they would have gained is priceless but i'd love for us to have a few older heads playing a few games next season. Definately Power and Tony smith, you older knowledge, experience and natural maturity would be great to have around the young lads, plus flan and me might learn a trick or two off you.
Our older players just seem to dissappear into the clouds and we need to make a larger effort to keep these guys involved at the club. we play many teams in this leauge, and a few games we get beat by sheer experience and game know how by older guys who have just been round the block a few times. Anyone agree?
Anyone else agree that if i had a tony smith, power, gordon anderson, mark jury ect ect we wouldn't have beaten afew more teams this year?
Maybe this season is a bit far gone, but maybe next season when we train well AS A TEAM, we can keep you older guys involved to give us a rounded squad of ages, experience and personalities that is need to strive OUR club forward.
I look forward to it!

It's all about balance really...We've had a few older guys in the squad this year, Ratty, Carlos and myself, and the gap in age between us (late thirties, early forties) and the most of the rest of the squad (early twenties except a few) is quite large.
That does show a lot of promise for the future - that we can be competitive in this league with so much young talent is great for our club - and that older players can be challenged for places by younger players is great too.
I think the real difference older players bring to a side is around temperment, judgement and having been around long enough too have seen most of it before, when the game is going against you, the rain is in your face and you need those important few points too win, experienced players will have been there before, and know what it feels like to draw deep from inside that little bit extra, and help other players find it too. I've seen that myself as a younger player in an older squad, being just 15 playing occasionally for Tony Hopes 1st XV many years ago, and watching and learning the way the guys handled themselves - very different from the youth team I was also playing in.
I think the important balance to strike is learning from the older players we have - not just the way they play, and what they do, but the parts of the game not obvious at first. When you're tired and walking to the next breakdown, and Carlos helps you along...when Ratty makes a big charge near the end of the game when you know he'll be more tired than the rest of us, and when I ask us to calm and compose ourselves before we get penalised off the park..these are things we've learnt over time, and are good examples to learn from, before the older guys have to leave the park for good.
So next year, we'll still need our old heads, we need them to be fit, play and train as much as they can, and be there to learn from, and support the younger growing side, and pass on our traditions - but the future will always lie with our younger players.
Bergs - now an older player...

I agree with Bergs and he's right, what we are struggling with is a lack of balance, certianally in the backs, I mean think about it, last week I was the most experienced back ( god I feel old), but it was difficult for me to do much on the wing.
Even if a few of the older heads were around to give 'specialist' training or even mentor the younger players who are now filling thier old positions, it would allow them to see thier position from the point of view from someone whos been there and done it, whether it be where to stand in defence/ attack or specific skills to that position.
Just my point of view, but we have found in the youth that when old boys like Spencer and Mark Anderson came up and done a session the boys benifited no end.
